Curriculum and Structure

The curriculum of the Global Health/Health Equity Track is designed to provide residents a well-balanced education in all fields of internal medicine while receiving an in-depth experience in global health and health equity. By working effectively with health disparities and in resource-limited settings, residents will acquire experience in global medicine/health equity theory as well as hands-on training through on-site clinical experience at our international training sites.

The rotation schedules in the Global Health/Health Equity Track will be similar to those of the categorical medicine program with the added benefit of expanded periods of time in undeserved settings in both local and international communities as well exposure to global medicine and health equity didactics.

The overall structure of our Global Health Track is as follows:

PGY 1

  • Opportunity to be involved in the UF mobile outreach clinic, which provides primary care to neighborhoods of Alachua County, Florida that are suffering health disparities
  • Involvement in Global Health morning reports and Global Health Equity seminars

PGY 2

  • During the end of your PGY-2 year you have the opportunity to do a up to 4 week rotation (6 weeks if using additional 2 weeks of vacation) internationally
  • Rotations in the UF mobile outreach clinic, which provides primary care to neighborhoods of Alachua County, Florida that are suffering health disparities
  • Continual involvement in Global Health morning reports and Global Health Equity seminars
  • Specialty rotations in ultrasound and infectious disease.
    • Ultrasound allows point-of-care diagnosis otherwise not able to be appreciated in resource-limited areas. Because of the mobility of US machines, US is widely used throughout the world in undeserved areas. Focuses include cardiac pathology, abdominal pathology, musculoskeletal diagnosis, and OB/Gynecology.
  • Research opportunities that you are able to carry into PGY-3 year and beyond

PGY 3

  • During PGY-3 year residents can return internationally, now more familiar with the logistics of the rotation sites and with built and sustained relationships with the local hospital faculties and NGO partners to jointly partake in medicine rounds and lectures
  • Continual rotations in the UF mobile outreach clinic
  • Continual involvement in Global Health morning reports and Global Health Equity seminars
  • Opportunity to apply for UF’s Global Medicine Fellowship to continue your global medicine education and experience
